TRADITIONAL USES

The highly aromatic nature of Lemon Bush has made it popular for medicinal as well as for insect repelling purposes. A weak tea is used as a cough and cold remedy, to bring down fevers and to treat malaria. A stronger decoction is used to treat skin problems, scabies and scalp infections. Some people inhale the smoke for asthma and chronic cough. Preparations are also used to soothe sore muscles.

Lemon Bush (Lippia javanica) is a hardy plant that can grow under difficult circumstances requiring little maintenance. It is known to colonize disturbed areas, making it a pioneer plant. It can grow in sunny areas but also in light shade and is easily cultivated from seeds or cuttings. It is highly aromatic making it popular for medicinal as well as for insect repelling purposes in cupboards, pot-pourri and even candles.
